Penweddig Pupils Win Competition

Nov 10, 2010 - Posted by: PenweddigAdmin

Three of Penweddig's Yr 13 pupils have won a film competition in North Wales.

A trio of young filmmakers have won first prize at the PICS Film Awards held at a glamorous Red Carpet event at Galeri, Caernarfon on the 7th of November.

The film, ’Y Linell’ (The Line) starring Gwion James and his phenomenal free running talent was created especially for the competition by Gwion, Jacob Prytherch and Glyn Dodd. With advice from Elin Vaughan Crowley, Arad Goch Theatre Company’s Reaching the Heights Community Worker they set about devising, shooting and editing the film. The competition stipulated that the film had to be 3 minutes long and either in Welsh or without language. Gwion had filmed tricks of his alternative hobby, parkour, on his personal camera in the past but the chance to make a 3 minute film using the latest equipment at Arad Goch was an opportunity he grasped with both hands. Calling on the expertise and advice of Jacob and Glyn who previously attended a
filmmaking course at Arad Goch the project became an all absorbing two camera shoot. With less than a month to put the whole film together, working after school, it took dedication and commitment from the young filmmakers to achieve the end product.
‘Y Linell’ (The Line) follows Gwion travelling from Constitution Hill to the Harbor in the most energetic and creative fashion. Aberystwyth is an impressive backdrop with the prom, castle, harbour and a few colourful walls all adding to the visual impact. With superb use of the Genod Droog track ‘Breuddwyd Oer’ and a bit of a twist at the end, there is no wonder that ‘Y Linell’ was shortlisted by the panel of professionals.
Elin Vaughan Crowley, Reaching the Heights Community Worker at Arad Goch said of the project -‘I’m very proud of what the boys created. ‘Y Linell’ is extremely watchable and could easily be used as a marketing tool for Aberystwyth. If any other young people would like to make their own film, then they’re more than welcome to contact me at Arad Goch’.
